I've suffered through the pain of others living in it, I've studied it through every means feasible to me, I have even found to my disappointment - myself doing it too. But what is this monster really?
Denial, there are some who believe that "ignorance is bliss" and perhaps on some level that is true. "What you don't know won't hurt you," is another common belief or saying that has been passed down from unhealthy generation to unhealthy generation. Think of the perpetrator of abuse or of the adult victim who opts to remain living in hell regardless of what the environment is doing to them or to the children. For these people ignorance is bliss, if you define bliss as living within the mental confines of ignorance and emotional/mental suffocation.
Some people enter the world of drugs/alcohol/sex for an escape, their own private form of denial. Some delve into the world of religion, centering their denial and 'lack of control' on everything that happens being 'god's will.' I'm sure there are other escapes from reality that are abused by the common denier, the person who will say and do anything to avoid facing the honest, true facts of their lives. There is displaced blame/guilt, excessively irresponsible behaviors and thought processes, there is over eating, over sleeping, over partying (with or without drugs/sex/alcohol).
The list seems endless, I could fill this page. The bottom line, in my opinion, is that deniers will do/say/be anything as long as they don't have to face the reality of their life situation. Deniers love to blame others instead of just getting off their asses and doing something themselves to end their poor situations. What is this monster called Denial? It is the epitome of suffering itself, it is the fuel for abuse, and it is the negatives you live with covered over by lies, misconceptions, and deceit.
Denial? It is the devil's dessert after a meal of your soul.
